ZeniMax QA Union Scores Historic Contract with Microsoft: A New Era for Game Dev Labor

In a landmark moment for the gaming industry, over 300 quality assurance (QA) workers at ZeniMax Media have reached a tentative contract agreement with Microsoft. This marks the first union contract at Microsoft since the wave of video game industry unionization efforts began four years ago.

The Road to Unionization

The journey began in January 2023 when QA testers across ZeniMax’s studios—including Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane, and id Software—formed ZeniMax Workers United-CWA. Microsoft, adhering to its labor neutrality agreement with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), voluntarily recognized the union.

Negotiations for the first contract spanned nearly two years, during which the union organized a one-day strike and authorized another in April 2025 to protest return-to-office mandates and outsourcing policies.

Key Contract Highlights

The tentative agreement includes several significant provisions:

  • Wage Increases: Substantial across-the-board raises and new minimum salaries for QA workers, addressing long-standing compensation disparities.
  • Job Security: Protections against arbitrary dismissal and the establishment of grievance procedures to ensure fair treatment.
  • Crediting Policy: Clear guidelines to ensure QA workers receive proper recognition in game credits, a significant step in acknowledging their contributions.
  • AI Implementation: A groundbreaking agreement on the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace, committing to principles that ensure AI usage is fair, reliable, private, secure, inclusive, transparent, and accountable.

Voices from the Frontline

Union members have expressed pride in their achievement. Page Branson, a senior QA tester, stated:

“This is a monumental victory for all current video game workers and for those that come after.”

Jessee Leese, another QA tester and bargaining committee member, emphasized the broader impact:

“Our first contract is an invitation for video game professionals everywhere to take action. We’re the ones who make these games, and we’ll be the ones to set new standards for fair treatment.”

What’s Next?

The contract is set for a ratification vote by the union members, expected to conclude by June 20. If ratified, it will set a precedent for labor negotiations in the video game industry and reinforce Microsoft’s collaborative stance on unionization within its workforce.

This agreement not only benefits ZeniMax QA workers but also signals a shift in the gaming industry’s labor landscape.
